Reducing Telecom Costs and Developing a Private Wireless Network with Regulatory Strategy
The client, a Venture Capital Firm within a Global Industrial Technology OEM, was tasked with developing a new business or investing an a technology to reduce overall wireless and broadband telecom costs for the OEM. As their technology solutions for industries such as aviation, electric power utilities, healthcare, and building automation became increasingly digital, they required secure, high-availability, and cost-effective wireless connectivity. With growing reliance on cloud technologies, IoT, real-time data, AI/ML, and edge computing, they lacked the industry expertise to meet these demands. Additionally, they sought to develop a private wireless network and data management platform that could integrate seamlessly with their industrial solutions.
Another challenge was the need to develop an investment and financial model to understand potential pricing models, capital and operating costs, and revenue streams from offering a new private wireless network. The client was also interested in evaluating CBRS for its network but required a regulatory strategy to convince the FCC to auction Priority Access Licenses (PAL) in smaller geographic sizes, making spectrum acquisition more affordable.
Viventum, serving as Entrepreneur-in-Residence, led the product and technology strategy for the client's New Business Creation team, focusing on a hybrid cloud and private network services platform for industrial customers. Leveraging deep expertise in CBRS, Private LTE/5G, IoT, and AI/ML cloud technologies, Viventum designed and developed a scalable private wireless network solution. Extensive market and primary research on customer requirements across sectors like Oil and Gas, Electric Power Utilities, and Aviation informed the solution's design. Viventum also led the client's regulatory strategy and engagement with the FCC, advocating for smaller geographical spectrum licensing, and represented the client in discussions with senior White House staff on 5G innovation and spectrum strategy.
Viventum crafted a comprehensive private network solution stack, developed a five-year, $250 million sales plan, and guided the client’s team through proof-of-concept development. To amplify market presence, Viventum produced a high-impact marketing video showcased at the OEM's global industry trade show, drawing significant interest from industrial customers. Viventum also collaborated with the client’s regulatory team on key filings and lobbied the FCC to support the firm's position on smaller licensing areas, ensuring affordability in spectrum acquisition.
Viventum’s efforts positioned the client as a frontrunner in private wireless network services. The trade show video generated high customer engagement and interest, opening the door for new business opportunities in industrial sectors. Viventum’s advocacy efforts with the FCC and senior White House staff resulted in stronger regulatory alignment for the client’s goals, providing a competitive edge in the 5G and private network space. The comprehensive product strategy and business plan laid a foundation for a $250 million revenue trajectory over the next five years.
